Suggestions for Week Seven:
M 11-6: Introducing & organizing your argument; returning to research
- Find and read your own research sources – continue researching!
- Come in prepared to share your thesis claim
- Do the positionality freewriting activity
- Write a Research Update comment. Over the weekend, you should be continuing to research your narrowed topic. By reading more sources, you’ll find additional ways to narrow your project and can start thinking about how to make an informed claim about your sources. In an approximately 200 word comment to the blogpost you wrote last week in class (where we did invention exercises), write about
- what sort of research you did over the weekend. Did you go to the library? Use databases? Read one or more sources? Take notes?
- what are your sources telling you about your topic? What sort of claim do you think you’ll want to make? What do you think you might contribute to the conversation?
- Assignment sheets:
- Sample essays — read the introduction to each essay AND the first few paragraphs in the main body after the introduction. For each one, ask yourself: What strategies does the author use in the introduction? What level of style does s/he use and how does s/he make that level of style clear to the reader? What is the thesis statement? Where does s/he go AFTER the intro? How does s/he move forward to start proving his/her claim?

W 11-8: Thinking about sources; visit to the Virtual-Human Interaction Lab (VHIL)
Writing due: Upload the most recent version of your working bibliography for your research project. No annotations need; clitation form can be informal. Just make sure you have a working list of the sources you’ve accumulated so you can refer to it during class today.
Optional Reading due: Read each of the sample essays to the end to get a sense of how they organize their arguments. (You will need to read the essays through within the next week, but we won’t be talking about this today in class, so this reading is recommended to inform the way you build your own outline, but not required.)
