Research Project Sandbox

When it comes to the topic of gaming popularity, most readily agree that gaming as a whole is expanding to new audiences. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of which platform is contributing the most to this growth. While some are convinced that the console gaming market is the most influential platform in this growth in popularity, others believe that the PC platform’s ubiquity or the ease-of-access to the mobile platform are the main causes of expansion in this market.

 

I am trying to learn about gaming platform preferences from the perspectives of gamers and game developers

because I want to find out which platform is the most popular to not only develop for but also to play on

in order to inform my reader of which platform they should target when they create games (save time) or which gaming platform to purchase (save money). Market analysis?

 

“Which gaming platform is most popular to develop for? To what extent is this platform decision influenced by current platform sales, genre, coding platform, etc.”

 

Next steps are to enumerate game-developer-specific needs or wants in a platform and other factors that may cause a game developer to work a specific platform over another platform, and then find research or surveys in which game developers answer questions like these.

 

Creating a sliding scale of game topics from most broad to extremely specific helps me find a question that is not too broad, so much so that researching it would take well over 20 pages, and a topic that is not so specific that it could be answered in a paragraph or two. It also helps put your topic into perspective, as my first idea ended up being the most general question on my sliding scale, indicating that it may be too unspecific for actual meaningful and concise research.

    Over the past week or so, I’ve been looking deeper and deeper into possible topics and claims. This process has been very difficult, as I want to avoid creating show-and-tell research. Unfortunately, I found a couple of bits of research that basically 100% explore my original topic of which game platform is most popular to develop on, so instead, I’m once again shifting my topic to a more broad scope. I think my final research question will be: “What is the future landscape of video game platforms?”: a cryptic question, but one in which I’ll explore changes in both game developer preferences and gamer preferences and extrapolate that into the future to determine what gaming will look like in 5 years. I hope to contribute my perspective of the future gaming landscape in the conversation of which platform will be king in the future. I will also be taking into account the thoughts of Peter Thier, who talks about gaming platform unification as opposed to one platform being the best.

    Over the weekend I did a lot of statistical research and explored my sources more. I found a really good site for statistic aggregation, statista.com, and read over the free version of Newzoo’s research. I’m going to be looking into Game Developer magazine, but that magazine seems to be out of print now. I’ll probably be going to the library’s west stacks and looking at the archived magazines they had in the gaming section.

    Just to conclude, I feel like my new topic is more explorable and less statistics based than the idea of popularity. Popularity is essentially formally defined, but the future is always unknown, so I’ll explore the future instead.

    It sounds like you’ve moved to a more predictive argument. That’s exciting and holds a lot of possibilities — but I think you’ll still find it challenging. You might end up incorporated some sources that are less scholarly; I could see WIRED, techcrunch, or even individual bloggers offering some interesting speculations on the future of gaming. I’m looking forward to learning more about where you think gaming is going in the future.
